The Emerging Moves Visual Art Exhibition draws on contemporary methods of painting and drawing, with a particular focus on process-based discovery.
This exhibition will be enacted in tandem with a student residency in the gallery space, where the artists will inhabit the gallery as studio. In this way, the space will shift and evolve as the artists-in-residence work, and in turn, the artwork will be informed by the changing studio environment.

Time – what is it, and how does it affect our lives? Recent scientific discourse suggests that it might not exist at all, but if that’s true, how did we end up with so many songs about it? USQ School of Creative Art’s 2nd year music students have combed the pop music vaults, coming up with a bunch of songs that deal with our experience of time; how it impacts on our daily lives, our life journeys and of course on our love-lives.
As part of the learning experience, each of the performers on stage has taken part in the arrangement and preparation of the music. Text has been devised with the assistance of Dr Kate Cantrell and the Editing and Publishing program.
Ticketing will be $15 adults, $7 for students.

‘The Storytellers Residency’ – Mcgregor X Deadly Ways
This workshop has been developed for the First Nations Deadly Ways Artists in Residence program. The 15 Artists in Residence are led in an exclusive five day print making workshop by Torres Strait Islander artist Glen Mackie, where they will all work on a series of artworks for an exhibition that will be a part of NAIDOC week.

Born on Yam Island in the Torres Strait, Glen Mackie has been elected as Yam Island’s ‘official’ storyteller. Glen’s mission is to keep alive the sacred stories of the four brothers who travelled from the north before memory and settled at Zenadh Kes, or what most Australians know as the Central and Eastern Torres Strait Islands. In Glen’s works, art and law are combined heroically – the figures are woven into rhythmic patterns of design. Paintings, prints and sculpted objects by Glen are held in numerous private and public collections nationally.

Daniel believes if you can paint a person you can paint a landscape. The five days will be broken up exploring paint, composition, scale, mark making and colour through these genres. Students will be encouraged to explore and find what excites them when creating and then be able to stick with the one genre or explore more with Daniel’s guidance.

Daniel Butterworth is a figurative artist, using images of himself in much of his work to express social, political and personal views. Having started his working life as a sign-writer, Daniel later completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Latrobe University and has been a practising artist for more than 20 years. This workshop is an introduction to playful exercises that will inspire, empower and connect you to your creativity. Using her background in drawing, collage, textiles and sculpture, Tiffany will walk you through simple ways to bring creativity into your everyday life by finding inspiration in the things you already have around you.
Tiffany will guide you through techniques with drawing and water-based mediums on paper and found materials. You are encouraged to bring what you already have or what you would like to try. You will need to bring items that you love and that inspire you. These could be scraps of fabric or crockery, images from book, old postcards, seed pods or pressed flowers – anything that resonates with you. We will use these items as prompts to develop your unique creative style.

Tiffany Shafran is an artist, mother, happenstance gardener, wanderer, food lover, avid reader, teacher and arts facilitator, Tiffany has a PhD titled Relics of all things precious: Curiosity and wonder in artists’ collections. Ten years ago, Tiffany took time away from her practice to focus on some big life events and knows first-hand how hard it can be to reconnect with a creative practice after a break. As a teacher and arts professional in the gallery sector, Tiffany loves helping artists develop their skills and ideas to achieve their creative vision.

Do you love repetition and want to learn the basics of silver jewellery fabrication to be able to make your own chains? Teaching the basics of chain making, your experienced tutor thoroughly explains all aspects of the process, so no experience is necessary other than to be able to work with your hands on a small scale. Students need good eyesight and the steady use of both hands. This course will provide instruction on safe work practices, understanding about tools and equipment, material preparation, and chain fabrication techniques which leads to students making their own silver chain. The workshop will introduce the basics of chain making and jewellery techniques such as making jump rings, silver soldering, filing, saw piercing and finishing. Scheduled class times are highly structured with a balance between demonstrations and students practicing techniques and creating their own chains. Upon completion, you will have the knowledge to continue to make your own chains and wear your creation home.

Born into the same family of potters, Clairy Laurence and Libby Usher are ceramicists and teachers working out of their studio in Brisbane. Clairy, your lead tutor is a ceramicist with over 30 years of experience. Her current work features minutiae and favours muted saccharine and high-gloss hard blacks and lustres. Clairy’s use of colour implies the interfaces between life and death, and good and evil that characterise her work. Floral and leaf motifs represent symbols of rebirth and renewal and inform her more improvised forms that react to the unpredictable shapes found in nature.
Clairy has an annual solo exhibition with Paper Boat Press and has shown recently in the ‘Beautiful bizarre’ magazine press, the Adelaide Jam Factory and at Bruce Heiser Gallery.

This workshop provides beautiful, well proportioned figure drawing and explores colour mixing and painting techniques for the figure. Make your drawings leap out of the paper! Learn essential techniques from the classical atelier. Accelerate your drawing skills to confidently and accurately block in any pose. This course will explore drawing techniques, gesture, anatomical landmarks, rhythms of the figure and more, working from the life model.
You will then learn how the colour wheel works in relation to painting the figure, the possibilities of a minimal palette that has stood the test of time, brush handling and the importance of tone.
Each afternoon we will explore the design concepts needed for strong compositions with impact, analyse masterpieces and learn how to research and evolve ideas to develop a series of works.

David Bongiorno is a figurative artist working in Maleny. Fascinated by the portrayal of the figure in art as a young child, he has been compelled to pursue it ever since. Recurring themes in his work explore the inherent beauty in form, and the decorative potential of the nude.
Consistently exploring media and techniques, his studies of anatomy, composition and art history inform his keen interest in the human figure. David also uses his experience in management to drive his vision for a flourishing art culture in his community through curating, event collaborations, and teaching.

June 27 – July 1, 2022
Over the five days we will complete a number of watercolour paintings and throughout the process we will concentrate on harmonising colour, using soft transitions and connected shapes to create paintings that sing. A lot of the colour work will be with greens and greys, warming them, cooling them, shifting tones and seeing how that affects the painting. Wet into wet work will play a big part, timing and understanding the relationship between the water on the brush and the water on the paper.
We will also look at colour interaction and how it affects perspective and mood in a painting. There will plenty of discussion on design and linear and aerial perspective. We will be turning ordinary scenes into pieces of art.

James has been painting in watercolour for over 25 years and has exhibited his work in galleries throughout Australia and Southern Africa over the last 10 years. James was born and spent most of his life on a farm in Africa where he started to paint scenes from the farm and African life. Some 20 years ago he made Australia his home, and fell in love with the Australian landscape, particularly the old farms, the warm soft colours and the light. This inspired him to paint more seriously.
He paints loosely in watercolour using wet into wet techniques. He does a lot of his work on site and is passionate about painting in the great outdoors.

Join award-winning writer and poet Kate Cantrell in this unique writing course!
There’s no magic formula for getting published. However, there are tips and tricks that, once discovered, can bring you closer to publication. Regardless of whether you’re working on a short story or a novel, the process of rewriting and revising is crucial. What happens after you’ve written your killer ending? How do you prepare your work for publication? In this workshop, Kate will demystify the pathway from pitch to page.
On the way, you’ll learn:
- How to revise your work effectively, without comprising your authorial aims or intentions.
- How to write an effective pitch, a stunning cover letter, and a catchy bio.
- Where and how to submit your work to an agent, editor or publisher.
- Where and how to promote your work to maximise circulation and reach.
- The most common mistakes that writers make when submitting their work for publication.
- Strategies for self-editing that will assist you with everything from plot to punctuation.
This course is a hands-on workshop that consists of creative writing exercises, critical reflection on practice, and industry-insider advice, led by an experienced writer, editor, and teacher. The course is particularly suited to short story writers.

Kate Cantrell grew up in Brisbane in the 1990s. She is an award-winning writer, editor, and critic.

Daniel Butterworth is a figurative artist, using images of himself in much of his work to express social, political and personal views. Having started his working life as a sign-writer, Daniel later completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Latrobe University and has been a practising artist for more than 20 years. With numerous solo and group exhibitions to his name, along with selection as a finalist in a large number of high profile portrait prizes, Daniel is now in demand as a guest artist and teacher in Australia.

This workshop will involve getting into a daily habit of nature-drawing in the context of a sketchbook. With a simple kit of materials you can carry with you everywhere, you will discover that you can be opportunistic about drawing from the natural world and this can help get us into daily creative habits of observation, discovery and wonder.
This class will run through different drawing exercises each day and practise these skills. We will explore the versatility of pen, ink and watercolour as fast and fun ways to record what we observe in the natural world. We will look at mark making and try different types of ink media in soluble and non-soluble form with the addition of quick watercolour washes and glazes. Our subject matter will include found natural objects, taxidermy and field trips.

This workshop will take you through a design process to help trigger your imagination and make a ceramic sculpture from a working drawing. The class includes explanation and demonstration of the five basic hand-building techniques. It will problem solve the making and carving of fine detailed features including eyes, teeth, fur, and feet, or whatever your sculpture entails, as well as the use of glazes and underglazes to complete the creature.

Kathryn, who is an experienced tutor, thoroughly explains all aspects of the process, so no experience is necessary other than to be able to work with your hands on a small scale. Students need good eyesight and the steady use of both hands. This course will teach you safe work practices, terminology, design considerations, understanding of the tools, equipment and materials needed to make your own micromosaic jewel. The workshop will introduce all the specialist terminology, the glass, jewellery bezels, adhesives and micromosaic techniques. Scheduled class times are highly structured with a balance between demonstrations and students practicing techniques and creating their own mosaics. Upon completion, you will have the knowledge to continue to practice your skills and wear your creations home.

5 July – 7 July, 2022
This workshop will focus on the technical aspects of camera performance — how to establish credibility and connection, shoot high quality self-tapes (auditions), and feeling comfortable on film sets. The course structure provides students a solid foundation for screen acting and the process of auditioning for Drama School. More importantly, they will learn how to identify and trust their own unique skills. All participants will be provided with scripts during the workshop which will be used to explore and develop characters. Additionally, if possible they will be asked to come prepared with a short monologue of their own choice. Examples will be available on the McGregor website. Throughout the workshop, participants will have many opportunities presenting to camera. Thomas will provide support and specific feedback for all students.
