Outer Space is so excited to announce that we’re running a final installment of our SUPERCUT Regional Workshop series in Toowoomba, hosted by the UniSQ School of Creative Arts!

Join SUPERCUT artists Ben Tupas, Peta Berghofer and Kim Ah Sam for hands-on workshops in projection installation, working with small objects, and weaving circles. This workshop is a great opportunity to learn more about the SUPERCUT project, collaborative practices and regional arts ecologies.

Please bring along an artwork of your own or an object that you’re comfortable moving around, as we’ll be working with these in one of the workshops on the day!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Ben Tupas is a Filipino Australian artist based on Giabal, Jarowair and Western Wakka Wakka land (Toowoomba, Queensland). His current practice works with video and sound. Ben’s work has been exhibited at Brunswick Street Gallery Melbourne (2023), Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts Townsville (2022), Crows Nest Gallery (2022), Outer Space Gallery Brisbane (2022), Arts On Top Bunya Mountains (2021), Artlands (2021), Metro Arts Brisbane (2018) Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery (2018), Unframed Festival Coolum (2016) and First Coat Festival Toowoomba (2016). Ben is an advocate for making the arts experience accessible through community engagement, public programming and arts education. From 2018 to 2020, he was the Artistic Director for LIT Festival: Stories In Light, a public arts festival that presents light-based art into Toowoomba spaces. His public art commission ‘Social Fabric’ will be installed in Toowoomba in February 2023. Ben is currently working on a theatre work based on Toowoomba’s 2007 Recycled Water referendum.

Peta Berghofer is a Toowoomba based artist working on Giabal and Jarowair lands. Berghofer’s ceramic practice is interested in clay’s long-standing ability to record history and reveal human behaviour. Her ambiguous forms sit between sculpture and function, often appropriating common domestic objects to explore elements of material culture. Whether functional or functionless, Berghofer’s self-referential ceramics are most often presented as the same body of work, exhibited as abstracted still-life environments. Here she plays with distinctions between gallery and domestic spaces, engaging with historic and contemporary tensions between art, craft, and design. Berghofer holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts with Honours through the

University of Southern Queensland and has exhibited her ceramic work both nationally and internationally. The artist has also completed several residencies across Europe having received the UniSQ Bellmaine French Appreciation Travelling Scholarship.

Kim Ah Sam is Kuku Yulanji and Kalkadoon artist based in Brisbane. Her work expresses her deep connection to country and her cultural identity through a unique and prolific approach to weaving. She is an experienced fibre artist and weaving workshop teacher engaging in collaborative making. She has completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art (CAIA) at Griffith University and was recently artist-in-residence 2020-2021 at Museum of Brisbane as part of The Storytellers exhibition. Her work is held in Museum of Brisbane collection among other public and private collections.

ABOUT SUPERCUT

Throughout 2022, Outer Space presented new works from forty-three emerging, early and mid-career practitioners through the regional art activation project SUPERCUT. Supported by the Federal Government’s RISE (Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand) COVID recovery fund and presented in partnership with Artspace Mackay and NorthSite Contemporary Arts, Cairns, the project focused on creating more opportunities and networks with regional artists, arts workers and communities throughout Queensland.
