Day 1: Printmaking, Ceramics, & Mixed Media - $40/per person

Printmaking with Dr. Rhiannan Johnson

USQ Lecturer Visual Arts Rhiannan JohnsonThis workshop focuses on art as a communicative device, where participants will investigate ways in which visual practices can be used to connect individuals and communities. Workshop participants will create a set of postcards using methods of collage, relief printing, and hand colouring.

Ceramics with David Usher

USQ Lecturer Visual Arts David UsherThis workshop will involve ‘hand-building’ with a white raku clay body. We will be sketching our designs first and then making small ‘hands’ as object #1, and then considering and sketching a small ‘talisman’ form that is personally significant (for example: a flower, a rubrics cube, car keys, or perhaps your toothbrush)

Mixed Media with Alice Rigby

Stretching a Line; Mixed Media Portraiture’ – Rethink the possibilities for works on paper in this multimedia figurative workshop with experienced teacher and artist Alice Rigby. Students will learn to stretch paper over canvas, and discover ways to extend their drawing practice with a variety of media. Learn new ways to see the face and figure, practice techniques to train your drawing skills, and create a resolved figurative mixed media work using pens, watercolour, acrylic, collage and varnish.

Forum Theatre with Dr. David Fenton

This workshop commences with an introduction to specific games and their rationale for use by Augusto Boal. Then we then move into an Image Theatre exercise, detailing through tableaux, the oppression of a particular scenario chosen by the students. The final activity is called Newspaper Theatre, where we select specific moments featured in a newspaper to craft several dramaturgical frames to explore the case and its oppression..

Workshop Outline

In this workshop we shall work on four book structures and discuss possible variations, demonstrating the versatility of the book as a container of text or as a sculptural object. Participants will be encouraged to develop a theme and create their own individual projects. The book structures are versatile, and all lend themselves to a wide variety of sizes and interpretations for journals, artists’ books, drawing books, sculptures etc. with soft or hard covers. Book structures will include folded structures, sculptural concertinas, a Coptic bound journal (feral or plain), a compound, hinged page binding (butterfly book), a book sewn on tapes.

Bio

Adele Outteridge lives in Brisbane and runs The Studio West End. She works in artists’ books, printmaking, sculpture, and drawing which have all been exhibited widely. Adele’s work is held in private and public collections nationally and internationally including the State Library of Queensland, Artspace Mackay, regional galleries, schools and University collections. Her work has also appeared in many publications including Keith Smith’s Non-Adhesive Binding series. Adele travels widely lecturing and teaching workshops and has participated in several artist in residence projects including those in schools, galleries, the Ramingining Aboriginal Community in remote Northern Australia, Tennessee, and New York. This workshop celebrates the joyous exploration of watercolour painting and the freedom to create. Annette believes that fear hinders learning, and with her guidance, you will embark on an inspiring journey to build confidence and embrace imperfection as part of the artistic process. Through a series of carefully crafted exercises, you will discover ways to apply watercolour to produce exciting results and enhance your work with additional media and creative techniques. Drawing instruction will also be given, and you will have access to Annette’s photographic references as a foundation for your creativity, your own photographs, and opportunities to draw directly from nature. Annette RaffAnnette Raff has an extensive knowledge of art and design fundamentals and is skilled in drawing and watercolour painting. Workshop Outline

Using locally sourced branches, sticks and slabs, participants will craft a functional and stylish chair to take home. We will cover the selection and preparation of suitable stock. Although there are many design options, it is planned to include armrests on the chair for strength and comfort. There will be time to carve or texture the seat. The aim is to primarily use hand tools, traditional ones like shaving horse, drawknife and spokeshave. The finish from these will imbue your piece with character and originality. The joinery technique we will use is round mortice and tenon. Once mastered you will take away a useful skill that opens further possibilities later at home.

Andrew MacDonaldAndrew had a mixed career in aircraft maintenance, diesel fitting and furniture making before studying art at USQ (UniSQ). His trade background has continued to influence his direction, so he treads a wonky line between industry, craft and art. Andrew worked in the USQ (UniSQ) School of Creative Arts in a technical capacity, with the focus on teaching students to make; the technicalities of creativity, and practice (or process) is still critical in his work. Andrew continues to exhibit and teach workshops in creating from modest mediums. He now works in the museum sector, in restoration, traditional crafts and exhibitions. Workshop Outline

Adventure into the world of drawing with a focus on the figure. This workshop will supercharge your technical drawing skills using graphite pencils and charcoal to accelerate your technique and anatomical understanding of the most difficult parts of figure drawing, including the head, hands, and feet, foreshortening and more. Broaden your knowledge of technique with a deep dive into shading, blending, accent lines and the weight of a mark, the nature of light, tonal patterns, and shapes to describe form.

Workshop Outline

A Deep dive into Coloured Porcelain is a comprehensive and fun exploration of ceramic colour, form, and approaches. The focus of the class will be on creating high quality ceramic pieces using nerikomi (pattern making) and neriage (marbled) techniques. These methods include colouring porcelain with ceramic stains and forming controlled and free form patterns without the use of glaze. This class is perfect for makers who are looking to discover their own unique style and enjoy testing, problem solving and refining their skills. NB. We will not cover slip casting or agateware in this workshop.

Larissa WarrenAward winning artist Larissa Warren is an established ceramicist, researcher, and art teacher. She creates from her home studio, a reclaimed underground bunker located on Tamborine Mountain, Queensland. Larissa has a national following through regular exhibitions, select gallery stockists, mainstream media coverage, and publications. Recent highlights include an interview on ABC Radio National’s The Art Show (2022), inclusion in Thomas Hoardley’s book: Nerikomi (2023), and presenting at Apmere Mparntwe, The 16th Australian Ceramics Triennale (2022), winning the People’s Choice and Special Acquisition Award for the Clunes Ceramic Award, Art Gallery of Ballarat, VIC (2019) and winning overall prize Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence (2018). Join in the fun of doing art. Together, let us discover your own style and way of artistic expression. My aim is for you to improve your artistic expression through proper and easy to understand guidelines, explanation, awareness, practice, and demonstration. You will be amazed at what you can do at the end of the workshop, even when you are just starting out. We will create up to three works per day, covering a wide range of topics including Urban, Landscape, Still life, Animals, Water scenes, Figures and even a Portrait. Something for everybody. I will bring in copies of the topics at hand, to save you from worrying. We are developing both drawing, pen, and watercolour skills, so you get triple the value and fun in this workshop.

Andrew MacDonaldAward-winning Australian artist Cees Sliedrecht began his art practice as a student of art academies in Rotterdam and The Hague (The Netherlands), leading to the opening of his Brisbane-based art school in the late 1980s. He runs frequent workshops around Australia, and internationally. Cees has featured in several artists magazines, and has been President of numerous art groups, including the Watercolour Society of Queensland Inc. in Brisbane. Workshop Outline

Adventure into the world of HOT GLASS! Create one-off glass beads, miniature artworks that others will marvel at. Teaching the basics of glass bead making, no experience is necessary other than to work with your hands on a small scale. Students need good eyesight and the steady use of both hands. Safety, understanding equipment, glass, and mandrel preparation all lead to making your beads. As the workshop progresses, more elaborate techniques will be introduced such as shaping beads, using stringers, and decorative techniques, tips, tricks, and troubleshooting. Scheduled class times are highly structured with a balance between demonstrations and students practicing techniques. Upon completion, students will have acquired the technical skills to continue to practice their glass bead-making skills in their studios. Due to the nature of this workshop, students are unable to work unsupervised out-of-class hours.

Kathryn WardillKathryn Wardill is a contemporary jeweller who received her Master of Arts, Fine Art by research from RMIT University. As a jeweller and glass artist she has actively participated in group and solo exhibitions internationally for the last 30 years. Wardill’s dedication to researching jewellery objects which combine metal and glass has resulted in a solo exhibition in the USA as a part of an artist in residency and work presented at Studio Ingot Melbourne. Workshop Outline

This workshop will explore the use of sketchbooks as an incubator, a sentimental keepsake, a mind clearer, a list holder, an idea launcher, a best friend, a personal, intimate, and honest playground. They are just for you, a safe space with no pressure to perform, a place to relax, a window into your thoughts and dreams and a visible record of a life observed, to be thumbed back through in times of creative drought. Our sketchbooks may be filled with lists, sketches, ideas, thumbnails, drawings, paintings, prints, rubbings, watercolours, collage, photocopies, ephemera, and sticky taped notes. We will carry them everywhere with us and we will be investigating as many ways of using them as we can fit into them!

Deb MostertDeb’s art practice is over 30 years young and involves drawing, painting, small sculpture, and public art. Interested in objects and collections of social and natural history, her artworks use gentle, offbeat narratives and a crisp aesthetic pointing to beauty, truth, and grace.
Deb works from a home studio on the Ipswich/Brisbane border. She holds a BA Fine Art and has had over 20 solo shows and been involved in more than 70 group shows in both regional and commercial galleries. Her works have been shortlisted into many national art prizes and are in state and private collections. Deb has over 15 years teaching experience and artist in residencies. Workshop Outline

This painting workshop will explore painting with oils in the ‘no fuss’ and quick technique of Alla Prima. Participants will be guided in a relaxed environment to explore immediate mark making to capture form and tone and enjoy the instant gratification of finished works created in a single sitting. Over the week the workshop will cover an introduction to oil painting and explore the fun and expressionistic nature of the Alla prima technique. Be prepared to get messy and loosen up with some gestural painting exercises and explore the genre of still life through new objects and arrangements each day. Discover new and fresh ways of seeing compositions and still life scenes within a relaxed environment. By the end of the workshop participants will have created many finished artworks to take home.

Andrew MacDonaldLauren Jones is a visual artist based on the Sunshine Coast. Working primarily in oils, her feminine portraits and still life scenes speak of moments captured in time. Jones’ works, executed with bold and immediate brushstrokes, are evocative and impressionistic. Her art exquisitely showcases the materiality of paint and celebrates the process of painting. Born in 1989 in Queensland, Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts (Creative Literature) from the Sunshine Coast University in 2009, and in 2012 a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) from Monash University. Jones is represented by Michael Reid Northern Beaches – Sydney, NSW, Studio Gallery Group – Melbourne, Vic, and CLO Studios – Noosa, Qld. Workshop Outline

David will be returning to Australia fresh from his painting workshops “in the footsteps of Van Gogh” in the South of France and his solo exhibition at London Contemporary Gallery in London. He will teach and demonstrate how to paint in acrylics loosely, with speed, light, and colour. He will be instructing about the Van Gogh technique and what we can learn from the most loved artist of all time.

David HinchliffeDavid has exhibited and conducted workshops widely around the world and is represented by 13 galleries from London to Singapore. He was taught by Artist John Rigby and William Robinson at the University of Southern Queensland (formerly DDIAE) in the early 70s. He has been painting and selling his paintings from the age of 12. Workshop Outline

This class will explore texture and found objects in jewellery making. It is anticipated that students gain a variety of skills such as low-tech casting and sheet metal texturing processes including etching and roller printing. They will emerge from the course with a collection of textured and cast metal material and shaped and drilled glass or stone that they can use in their studio practices. Techniques include etching copper/brass with ferric chloride, roller printing, cuttlefish sheet casting, drilling, and shaping ‘hard’ materials like glass and stone. While there will be some provision to create finished items of jewellery such as glass earrings and silver cast rings, the focus will be on experimentation to build up textures, create 3 dimensional objects and gain experience and confidence with the techniques.

Rebecca WardRebecca Ward is a contemporary jeweller and artist based in Jinibara Country near Maleny, where she works from her off-grid solar-powered studio on Stoney Edge Nature Refuge. Her practice Stick+Stone Jewellery seeks to illuminate the humble beauty of sticks and stones in their natural states, and human-made overlooked materials that natural processes have ‘re-wilded’.
Her focus on materials that have been acted upon by nature gives the opportunity to create stories, examine memory and explore our material engagement with country. This painting workshop will explore paint application, composition, scale, mark making, and colour through looking at the portrait, landscape, still life, figure, and life drawing. Students will be encouraged to explore, find what excites them when creating, to then be able to develop one genre or explore more with Daniel’s guidance.

Bio

Deb MostertDaniel Butterworth is a figurative artist, who uses images of himself in much of his work to express social, political, and personal views. Having started his working life as a sign-writer, Daniel later completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Latrobe University and has been a practising artist for more than 20 years. With numerous solo and group exhibitions to his name, along with the selection as a finalist in many high-profile portrait prizes, including the Doug Moran Portraiture Prize and the Archibald.
